Mission of Culture

The Tzu Chi Mission of Culture plays an important role in spreading Buddhist culture. Everything from radio, audiotapes, publications and TV broadcasting to the Internet is fully utilized. We hope that through these media, people can learn about Buddhism and the Tzu Chi culture, and that we can help save all people from the suffering of this world.

Tzu Chi officially published the first issue of Tzu Chi Monthly magazine in July 1967. That was the first step that Master Cheng Yen took to advocate Buddhism culture. A medical scholarship was established in 1982 to encourage talented young people to move into the medical field. A radio show, "The Tzu Chi World," was first broadcast in January 1985. On August 1, 1986, the Tzu Chi Cultural Center was opened in Taipei. Six days later, the Tzu Chi General Hospital in Hualien was opened, and ground was broken for construction of the Still Thoughts Hall, the "cultural castle of the Tzu Chi spirit." Another biweekly magazine, the Tzu Chi Companion, was first published in September 1986. To give readers convenient access to Tzu Chi publications, the Tzu Chi Cultural Publishing company was established in 1990. Buddhist and Tzu Chi cultural publications and books were then delivered to bookstores and convenience stores, instead of being passed out by volunteers.

Starting from January 1991, in conjunction with the Taiwan Government Information Office and the Labor Bureau, Tzu Chi hosted the "Happy Life" series of public lectures. By January 1996, over a hundred lectures had been given. The "Tzu Chi World," a TV program, was first broadcast on the Taiwan Television cable network in February 1995. On January 1, 1996, the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation went on the Wide World Web (http://www.tzuchi.org.tw) to spread Tzu Chi's love and culture to every corner of the world. The Tzu Chi Great Love Television station began broadcasting on January 1, 1998. On August 1 of the same year, Rhythms Magazine was first officially published. As of now, we can say that the promotion strategy of the Tzu Chi mission of culture is quite complete.

The first issue of the Tzu Chi World monthly magazine was published in Los Angeles in 1991. The Vancouver Chinese Voice radio station has broadcast eight minutes of Master Cheng Yen's Still Thoughts every Friday since 1992. These activities have helped to motivate Tzu Chi people abroad to promote the Tzu Chi mission of culture overseas.

Mission of Education

In order to help solve the shortage of nurses on Taiwan's east coast and provide a source of nursing staff for the Tzu Chi General Hospital, and in the hope of training nurses who would be both skilled and compassionate, Master Cheng Yen established the Tzu Chi Junior College of Nursing in Hualien in 1989.

In order to train more medical personnel for the Tzu Chi General Hospital and to improve some inadequacies in the Taiwanese medical system, and in the hope of cultivating for society and all humanity doctors who would treat patients as they would their own relatives, the Master also established the Tzu Chi College of Medicine in Hualien in 1994.

The nursing school was upgraded to the Tzu Chi College of Technology by Taiwan's Ministry of Education in August 1999, and the medical college was upgraded to Tzu Chi University in the summer of 2000. The Tzu Chi High School and Tzu Chi Experimental Elementary School opened in September 2000. The establishment of these schools realized Tzu Chi's goal to set up a comprehensive educational system which offers education all the way from kindergarten to post-graduate studies.

In 1991, the first overseas Tzu Chi Youth organization was set up. In 1994, the first overseas Tzu Chi humanities school was established in the United States, which was the first step in the future expansion of the overseas mission of education.

Mission of Medicine

Beginning in 1972, Tzu Chi arranged free clinics for low-income families twice a week. In 1978, Master Cheng Yen decided to established a new hospital. In 1979, after she got permission from her mentor, Dharma Master Yin Shun, she put her plan into action.

The Tzu Chi General Hospital in Hualien was opened on August 7, 1986. It was the first hospital in Taiwan which did not require a security deposit from patients before they could get treatment. This policy received the support of the government, and the health department of the Republic of China later issued a regulation that no hospital in Taiwan could charge patients this security deposit. Furthermore, the Tzu Chi hospital allowed all monks and nuns to receive treatment without charge.

The Hualien hospital was only the first step of the Tzu Chi medical mission. Tzu Chi Dalin General Hospital started construction in 1996. The Hsintien hospital in Taipei and the Kuanshan hospital in Taitung both opened in 1999. Plans were also laid for the Children's Rehabilitation Center and the Tzu Chi Tantzu hospital in Taichung. Master Cheng Yen hopes that with a nation-wide Tzu Chi medical network, people throughout the island can have equal access to good medical resources. Her ideal is that every town and village can have a hospital with good, altruistic doctors and nurses.

Tzu Chi charity work abroad originally focused on helping to provide medical treatment for the poor. The Buddhist Tzu Chi Free Clinic Center in Alhambra, California, was opened in 1993 to provide free medical care for financially disadvantaged people in the community. The establishment of the center was the first step in extending the medical mission outside of Taiwan. Later, the Tzu Chi office in Vancouver, Canada, in conjunction with the Vancouver General Hospital, established the Tzu Chi Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.. We also have a kidney dialysis center in Malaysia. In addition to these permanent medical centers, other Tzu Chi offices around the world frequently provide free clinics for the poor.

Mission of Charity

Tzu Chi's mission began with charity work. When the Tzu Chi Foundation was first established in 1966, it started with providing charitable help to the poor.

Tzu Chi's mission of charity is currently divided into six categories: 1. providing long-term help to low-income families; 2. donating rice to low-income families; 3. subsidizing clinical diagnosis and prescriptions; 4. providing medical aid; 5. providing emergency help during disasters; 6. assisting the poor and orphans with funeral needs.

Tzu Chi has been promoting its overseas mission of charity in local countries since the establishment of the U.S. Tzu Chi Foundation in California in 1985 and the subsequent proliferation of its global branches and coordination offices. Master Cheng Yen hopes that, based on the philosophy and method of "self support and use of local resources," Tzu Chi's overseas missions can inspire Great Love and activate local sources of compassion.
